Canada is weird.. in one sense it's a very free place, in another sense not so much.. our constitution and government powers are different than the US
In Canada:
technically no property rights (you don't own land)
no right to firearms (no one is going to ban hunting rifles though),
ways to override supreme court decisions in *certain* circumstances
the federal government's power is technically supreme in all things (or at least they can veto any province if they really wanted to)
cities/towns are not constitutionally protected levels of government
On the other hand:
the equivalent of citizens united got struck down
the election agency for federal elections is 100% federal agency controlled.. registering to vote is easy: check a box on your tax return.. there is some gerrymandering but it's much more limited in scope. The procedure to set districts is done (mostly) independently of the politicians.
gay marriage/abortions are legal
safe injection sites (and now marijuana) is legal.
The division of powers between federal and state(province) is different. Ours is what the US envisioned and vice versa for the most part (other than Canada has one criminal code and it's federal).
What's somewhat amusing is that prior to the 1960s, Canada made the US look liberal.
