SO i finally bought a 1TB hard drive. DO i just drag and drop my files there? It came with an auto sync program but only has a 30 day trial version. I want to know if I can drag and drop my music and movies and pics there and just set the programs up to access them over there.

yah, but it might cause problems if it's not formated as NTFS. drops some stuff that FAT doesn't support.

assuming you are using windows, you will have no issues with an external hdd You can just drag and drop like you can with any other folder. If it's FAT32 then if you have a file beyond a certain size you won't be able to read it on the hdd.
There is no need for any other software and imo those sync programs are somewhat useless

ya, it'll act like a really big USB stick, basically

and ya, if it's FAT32, reformatting it would be a good idea :p
I can find you a tutorial on how to do it if you want, if you tell me what OS you're on and potentially bug me a bit :p

it should show up as another drive when you plug it in and if you're on windows, it'll give you the option to view its contents using Windows Explorer

and as the fluffster said, sync programs are pretty much useless for everyday use

most likely its formatted as FAT32 (my kingston 8GB stick was formatted as FAT32 and also my 500 GB external hd was on same format).

The best part is done right with a usb head unit in your car you'll never have to carry another cd. Although its not optimal. Load times with my 1 tb hdd suck. A large storage ipod is much better, and faster

FAT32 is most compatible filesystem, all OSes from Win9x to Mac OSX can use it, NTFS comes 2nd.

ou812: you could have just convert it to NTFS, bit quicker than formatting.

They like to do fat32 on stuff, I think to waste your time some.

I would highly suggest not using their software, especially if it is only a trial.

hehe, naw, it's what Marshall said. it's compatible across different OS because it's a simple file system. no security.

I bought a Toshiba 1.5TB last year for around 75$ :P. FAT32 helps if you have a MackBook, iMac or w/eMAC. But it restricts you to approx 2.1 GB/file and limits some file transfer speeds. Like someone said...it's pretty much a big USB stick. My opinion is you should go NTFS. If it's USB3, connect it to a USB3 mainboard and the transfer speed is 3x better than USB2. Usually the software that goes with it is simple and I never found out why u should use it. Just do the c/p like you do on a normal HDD, 'cept u have the option of unplug it :P

I have two WD Externals, a 1.5 TB and a 1 TB.

While it is a TREMENDOUS waste of storage space, I actually use FAT32 since that is the only format that is compatible with my PS3s.

Usually, they stay hooked up to my computer, and I am able to access pretty much any video, audio or picture files anywhere in my house. Clutch.

I formatted to NFTS. I only paid 79bucks. So far I like it. Kinda sucks getting my media players to read it for some reason but I finally got one to play my music I put on it.

Foobar2000. I keep changing the directory to read from the external and it just scrolls thru the music with out playing anything. I got winamp to work, had to clear the library and reload it.

i had problems with adding music from my SD card to my Windows Media Player library. tried to move my music to the SD card on my Mini to free up space on the OS drive. think it treats it more like a music device than a harddrive. dunno. was one of the reasons that i bought my Duo.
