shaw is satellite isnt it?

Satellite connections isnt going to give anywhere NEAR that speed and if its DSL its impossible.

If its fiber then you'll have to wait god knows how long for them to update the lines and if they are anything like bell that wont be for years yet unless your a new sub division.

I wouldnt hold your breath QZ.

If it is true i may become your new neighbour though and move in with mom in edmonton :P

they don't only exist in Ontario as satellite.
They are the cable provider in select regions (Burlington and Hamilton, for example).

Shaw used to have a big chunk of the Ontario market in the 80's and earlier. I remember we used to have shaw cable when I was a kid, but one day it all converted to Rogers. Shaw and Rogers made a deal where Rogers would stay out of the west and Shaw would for the most part stay out of the east.

teksavvy.com* martian.

I had rogers at my house at school this year but it pissed me off all year, gonna see if I can get teksavvy this year, hoping it's available in Guelph.. I'd kill for unlimited bandwidth, Rogers charged like $5 bucks/gb for going over..

im switching to teksavvy as well. Ordering it tonight.

Round about 200$ to switch over though so be prepared for initial cost.

100 for modem
10 for shipping
25 for set up
54 first months bill

Then of course the ridiculous taxes we need to now pay. However for myself personally it will save me 30$ a month from rogers PLUS i wont take it up the ass when i go over 80GB like i do with rogers.

Well worth it if ya ask me.

Yeah, I was paying $87/month for the best internet Rogers offered, plus the occasional ridiculous over limit fee. Connection also went down a lot and was a lot slower than advertised..

Hmm, with Rogers..

8 months x 87 = $696..

With teksavvy
8 months x 54 = 432 + 135 for initial costs = $567 + taxes?

Do you know what the taxes are like?

Actually fios fiber is already kind of obsolete, new installs are getting wireless fios, fiber in its current form is too expensive to install and maintain. At least as of my mother retiring from verizon fios a few months ago.

...wireless fios?

doesn't the "fi" in "fios" stand for "fiber optic"?

how the hell do you have wireless fiber

Galandy: ya, shaw is the only cable in alberta; if your mom is using rogers, she's doing it via mobile, because the only DSL is Telus; rogers does have some "air stick" which is basically a cell phone data plan that you can plug your computer in, for people way out in the middle of nowhere...

wireless fios makes no sense; fios == fibre; wireless == wireless; the two can't meet!

I want fios! but increased shaw speeds are a good start...

And also, fios isn't obsolete.. it isn't even rolled out to 99% of people in North America... fiber optic can scale to 1Gbps relatively easily, so you can't possibly say that is obsolete... unless you have an OC48 or something like that... (backbone level speed...)

Its actually fiber to the premise, your home would still be wired but think of the fios network as one giant router. Your home connects to the wireless fios box then that connects to the fios network. Fiber has been run in buildings long before "fios" was around. Fios was the idea of making a completley fiber network, much cheaper to just run the fiber in your home home then have it connect restlessly, similar idea as wimax if you're familiar with that.

Obsolete wasn't a good word to use, as far as I was told verizon was abandoning the complete fiber network, and going fiber to wireless to save on costs involved in laying and splicing underground cables.

but... that defeats the purpose of fios; the purpose of fios is to have *really fast speeds*

wireless can't deliver that... n is what, 108Mb ? "theoretical" (in practice usually *much* less, call it 50Mb)

it'd be much faster if you plugged it into a Gb router or switch...

I use Gb ethernet between my computeres here, and I can tell you it's a *HUUUGE* improvement over 100Mb... especially when streaming 1080p videos for example...

I've always been under the impression foods capable is not the same as offered limits, meaning I don't believe a fiber potential is even offered as a plan. I'll ask big momma, fios is all she did for the last few years. She was one of the first few in nj trained for fios.

1-sony my dash alarm clock
1-bluray player
Ps3, 360, wii
Mine and brothers phones and my iTouch all hitting wifi or hardwired, and basically everything is set up as media servers. Lots of back and forth between all the systems all through a cisco e3000? Been a few years since I bought it, whatever the top end series is. Most user friendly router I've ever seen. Still don't think I'm coming close to half potential.

The biggest difference I noticed tbh was seek speed; if you click around in a movie you're watching over the network, it's instant on Gb; but on 100Mb it takes like 1 second to buffer before it will continue playing...

and 100Mb can't handle the 1080p movies that aren't super-compressed...

i did the cheaper service for the first month. From there i will gage if it will be enough or if i will need to pay the additional 12 a month for unlimited.

7 Days minimum to get it hooked up, however i was able to choose to have the service transferred from my previous ISP which means i wont need to cancel or piss around with rogers. Just drop off the modem when its hooked up with teksavvy and save me some 30$ a month.

Plus that means i dont have any downtime which is awesome.
