I'm trying to figure out the name of an old WWII movie.. this one took place in Africa, and I don't remember too much of it.

The part that I do remember was that both sides (german/english) are in need of water, and they somehow happen to find water in like a sinkhole/cave.

I know it's not much to go off of, but hoping someone could ID it for me

Thanks

Kelly's Heroes would also be a great call: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065938/

Clint Eastwood leads a motley crew of screwballs deep into German territory to rob a stockpile of gold.

I might be wrong about this - this movie was on here last night on movies4men (no, its not a porno channel ;P )

Overrun

British soldiers are stranded behind enemy lines with a handful of English nurses during a heated desert battle in WW II. Desert grit, gunfire, and exploding tanks make this classic war film....

Sahara pwns your list big time. :p

In addition to Kelly Heros mentioned above, from memory I'd add Guns of Navarone, Where eagles dare, or The Secret of Santa Vittoria. (yes, this one IS a war film. Well, kinda)

bogart and lloyd bridges.

a quality movie. i have seen most of these many, many times. out of them, holden in stalag 17 is probably the best (i'm a billy wilder fan by nature). (of the ones mentioned)

to have and have not
the train
sands of iwo jimo

now it is interesting, i find at least, preminger would costar in stalag 17 and then go on to direct in harms way. old movie trivia is fun :P

Also, as far as books on WWII, I think "Why the Allies Won" by Richard Overy was probably one of the best analyses of the title topic I've read; was very enlightening...

I never said I picked that one as the best/most realistic or anything of the like - was just looking for the name of a movie I couldn't remember.

With other people listing movies, I'm kinda surprised that Force 10 isn't on here =)

But yeah alot of people are posting some good ones for sure

Enemy at the Gates is pretty damn awesome too. The book it's based on, War of the Rats, is totally different in tone, and for good reason. The book could not have been a movie as is, too much "head game" stuff.

he always gets me pretty good, so +1 and back to even for him!

force ten from navarone i find to be boring. same with a bridge too far. enemy at the gates i did not like but yet enjoyed watching it atv the same time.. so take that as you will..

as far as market garden goes, the military channel (along with el alamen and the bulge and the doolittle raid) takes care of that more than enough every single week, so dramatizations aren't needed :P

now that i mention it, thirty seconds over tokyo is an incredible film.
the mountain road, as well.
waterloo bridge is less of a war and more of a romance, but vivien leigh is more than enough for me, so it counts (starts wwi, ends wwii and is the earliest film to actually reference wwii as an event (1940), thank you robert osbourn --again with the movie trivia!)
the long voyage home, john ford
the flying tigers (thats right communist china, america defended you from the imperial japanese, oh how quickly you seem to forget)
mrs miniver
action in the north atlantic
operation pacific.. whichever it was called where bogart gets booted from the navy (planned) and thrwarts a fictionilized invasion of the panama canal by the japanese
destination tokyo, but i'm a cary grant fan so i'm biased on this one
passage to marseille, but again with the bias, i'm a huge bogart fan
the fighting seabees

and i think i'm done i am now having trouble remembering titles and distinguishing plot lines

oh, and the classic john wayne comedy, donovans reef.

i think i spent too much time watching old movies in my life.. who wants to talk about non war films? ;)

The movie was more of a propaganda fluff piece.
