It's less ridiculous when we realize there was an FS by a fully prepped, fully stocked 55 member alliance... and a CS by a 60 member alliance on those first two days

like I said, I think it will definitely lower prices -- as it will put more of a price ceiling on for people who don't know the prices of their priv vs public, but comparing it to what will probably be the biggest military buying day of the set (without TMBR's online) isn't an apples to apples comparison.

Like I said in my post announcing this, it's a good change that is necessary for a new generation of users. Slag is one of the best commie-indy runners in the game, if not THE best, and he didn't object to this change, so I'm hesitant to say it's ruined and no longer viable. We discussed this change pretty in depth before making it, as we wanted to do it right.

university fighting contests are useless, most schools unknown to the vast majority of people.

I bet almost no one's heard of the school I went to... but anyone who is from this area knows that it's a good university :p
no one would think "oh, Dave went to Guelph? that's a crappy school" unless they went to a rival school, like McMaster or Waterloo and think more lowly of those others around them :p

I expect the vast majority of students who play this game are in the similar situations

It's not really a dying fad, it's just changed from being in-your-face to running in the background. Not to mention that Facebook is just the next logical step in a process that goes website -> Facebook -> Mobile devices.

the good thing about Facebook is that it links together our marketing model with the medium. being able to take advantage of that effectively will be good.

Just as a quick FB update -> everything is working nicely to create an account and play through facebook.... I'm just working on the recruiting system. You'll be able to invite people to your tag, your server, the game in general or send pact requests (non FFA) via Facebook.
We're focusing on making the experience for new players a better one, as right now it's a little daunting to get involved in the game. This was a major problem Earth had for years -- a steep learning curve.

if we did, we'd actively look to hurt others, rather than just looking at improving ourselves.

we do grab a lot of stuff, but that's a risk we take and it sometimes leads to war.

I would say LaF is at the farthest end of that spectrum, but that spectrum is not comparable to that of the war alliances :p

I don't think that's entirely true, Requiem. There is definitely a niche for a turn-based strategy game like this. It's not the same kind of market we would have seen in the 90's, but one certainly exists.

Making the move to include new platforms like Facebook and eventually mobile devices is the core of our marketing strategy. We need to make the game appeal to our target market if we want it to be successful. To make it appeal to this new market, we've had to build entirely new pieces to the game which never existed before and update many other aspects of the game.

We only get ONE chance at this, and we want to ensure we do it properly. Look at Mars2025, for example. I'm not sure of the whole story, so please correct me/expand on this if you know more. To my knowledge, they just plopped the game on Facebook as-is and started marketing it, but they didn't do a really good job making it into a positive user experience or able to retain users. They got a lot of players, but those accounts were dormant within a short time and the existing community was unhappy with the whole thing.

That takes time, and both qz and I have day jobs and Slag is busy with school (although not in the summer :p).
Anyways... hopefully that explains why we're not just tossing our half finished work out there and seeing what happens :p

All I'm saying is that if retals are made within the 48hr window, I wouldn't expect any problems at all. If it's between 48-72, it will likely become an FR situation.

And to answer some of the other points, about multiple hits and stuff... that becomes an FR situation, and in each one of those is dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

This isn't meant to be bullying, anyone who thinks it is has missed the intent of this change in policy entirely.

if you'd like to retal LaF hits between 48 and 72 hrs and claim it as retals, that's your prerogative... but I expect it will cause a situation where reps from each alliance will get involved.

well part of the reason why alliances are losing members, IMO, is that they are not tailoring the playing experience to be what their members want -- at least in not any sustainable way.

From my experience playing as a fighter and a netter, there are generally a few things members want.
-Wars that are fun, challenging and not a blowout for one side
-Being able to fight generally on your own schedule (ie not fighting a war one set, then being AB'ed OOP the next set and into a war for the duration)
-Being able to net when and if netting is desired
-A community of people who have a good time playing.

Think about the time since EC started. I don't think we have had a solid community since we left 1a... EC was a complete failure IMO as it accentuated the problems that already existed without removing a big part of the cheating element due to incomplete mod tools. Think back to EC.... were there many fun and challenging wars on that server? Not really... most were FS's and then 2 weeks of mopping up, or gangbangs or blindsiding people.
Who fought on their own schedule? Really, no one did... most of the wars were forced by the same 3 or 4 alliances reset in and reset out.... near the end, it was almost a crapshoot to see who was going to get hit.
Who was able to net when they desired/needed to to regroup internally? None of the netters were able to for the latter half of EC; they were systematically targeted.
Good time playing? The major talk was about how long it would take until the game died, or until there was no competition left for some of the major alliances.

If you look at that, NO ONE was playing in EC in the way that made the Alliance game great. I think a major part of that was the change in turn structure from 2 turns per hour to 3 turns per hour.

I'd almost like to see us go back to 2 turns an hr vs 3 so that we can make the playing experience better for war folks. Mitigating FS's will result in better, longer wars where the FS doesn't decide who is victorious. That was the biggest mistake that was made in the later stages of Earth2025, IMO -- the change from 2 turns per hour to 3 on the EC server.
It made FS's too powerful to be absorbed and fought back against in most cases, and with the political shift that went on during EC, it just served to make the problem worse.

To be fair, TIS turned their backs on LaF after the first FULL SLIT war in EC.
After that point, LaF's involvement in SLIT was tangential and our efforts were focused on a 1v1 war with Rival, which was green lighted by all of TIS despite Rival having pacted us.

I personally always felt that the decision not to get involved in fighting with IX/SoL or TIE as SLIT broke up was more of us saying "you guys both screwed us, we don't want to help either of you." We had just spent 5 months fighting a guerrilla war... why would we jump back into bed with any of the alliances who were cool with us being driven from the game?

But that was just my personal opinion... The opinion of LaF may differ :p

But that is one of the things that pisses me off the most about SLIT... the goal for some of the people who lead the alliances in SLIT was not just to win the war, it was to obliterate and humiliate the enemy, driving away their membership so that SLIT would "win the game." This was put into practice moreso later with the "pactless" strategies and perpetual war against people who don't want to fight.

LaF never subscribed to that theory, but it's a theory that has dominated server wars for the last several years.
