thought you could turn it off from account pref's, but there doesn't seem to be any drop-down or checkbox for it.

Hmm. Tried on my phone and found it quite easilly.

Think the problem with the browser was that the checkbox has a black background. Can't remember if it was ff3.6 or opera 9. As i use both at work

I'll be able to find it now, just a bit hidden because of the color. Pretty sure it was opera.

Anyway, might be worth using label tags around the text anyway.
