Besides sharing logins with each other, LAE leaders were engaged in a concerted cheating effort across multiple servers involving the countries deleted on Wednesday and Thursday. The leaders involved are Dark Morbid, Ice Man, jagernacht and llaar. This is very unfortunate event, and a black day for the game.
Before I go into the evidence, let me preface it by saying that it was obtained by a third party who I will not name and you can all make your own assumptions about who it was. He asked to remain anonymous, and I'll respect that. He claims the information was provided to him by a source inside of LAE, so of course I viewed the information VERY skeptically. He provided several screenshots of various pages inside the LAE site which showed that there was a secret board to discuss their cheating activities, and DM coded a method of login-sharing and country management into the LAE site to facilitate cheating. I again viewed this skeptically, as it could have been doctored, but another image showed a privileged conversation qz had with DM, in which qz mentioned a few aspects of the game's security, which were accurate and only qz, Slagpit and I could have known at that point. This was posted on a thread so that they offenders could discuss its implications on their cheating.

You can see there that there is a conversation between qz and DM that I edited out, then following it, DM, jagernacht and llaar discuss how they feel they can beat our security.
That pretty much clinched it for me that this information was legitimate, and that is really, really unfortunate. I can't stress how much it upsets us that this has happened.
So this threads discuss an overview of how they cheat and how their site is developed for cheating.

You can see all of them chatting there about it. To be able to effectively play these countries, one of the players, jagernact, bought a proxy service for them so they could have access to a private proxy network which they felt would be able to beat our security.
So, as said above, they had a special "Country Pool" section created for sharing countries, which is shown below (personal information has been removed):

You can see the username, password, a little flag telling you if the country is played or not, strat, email and IP location. We feel this was used to organize the playing of the countries by these 4 players, so that everyone could make sure they are using a proxy in the right location. This functionality was built into the LAE site under the "Secret Stuff" menu at the bottom of the menu bar, under the "Country Pool" link
This is all pretty damning stuff, and we feel we have no decision but to act here. DM has obviously been removed from the staff, after he violated our trust and the game rules. I brought him in there to build the forums, so I will bare the responsibility for that . He never had access to any game data or game code at all. His mod and developer access has been removed. Nukevil joined the staff recently to help with forum development, as I'm sure many of you have likely noticed, and he'll step up to fill that role.
We also feel that since the LAE site was developed to cheat at the game, we will be revoking their API code effective immediately, until such a time that we feel the site will no longer be used to facilitate cheating.
Part of the reason that I am eager to get this information out is that through a conversation with DM recently and through other information that I'm yet to actually confirm, it seems like these players plan to continue cheating and enhancing their cheating efforts. DM actually commented that we need cheaters like him to make sure our mod tools work.... he is wrong. I encourage the community to come together and universally condemn this sort of cheating activity and culture of thinking that breaking the rules is OK. We don't want to start enforcing harsher punishments than deletions, but we're not afraid to walk down that path. I feel the 4 players who were implicated here are good players and generally assets to the community, so I hope you four will listen to me when I tell you that we will NOT tolerate cheating so stop it now.
So let me end by saying this to everyone....
Come on folks... it's a text based online game. Let's get real here... I know we all love it, but we need to all play within the confines of the rules so that we get the most out of it. A lot of the talk around here is always about future growth, getting new players and pushing the game forward. That is our goal, it always has been and always will be. If you all want this game to succeed, everyone has to work together to move toward that goal. When issues like cheating come up, it takes away from our development time while we deal with it. We want to work on pushing the game forward, developing new features and moving the game into new markets and mediums. We can't move forward if we're constantly dealing with unnecessary upkeep because of a few players. So I implore anyone who is cheating right now, whether your have been called out yet for it or not, to really revisit your decisions to cheat.
Thanks,
Dave
