no, it's meant to be a cheap gimmick that earns people money. it's all in the name, why use the name Rosetta Stone, it's not like people don't associate it with translation.

you going to learn anything if somebody hits you over the head with it? no, you'll just get a concussion.

it's just a plain simple fact.
you don't need to know it, if it's beyond your ability to learn it.

fuss at it all you want. if you can't understand it, then you can't use it.

Don't get too frustrated, learning a new language blows for the first 3 months. The idea behind Rosetta stone, is that you' WON'T know all the words at first.

It's trying to teach you to catch things out of context first, and speaking properly/understanding every word later on down the road. It will suck at first, but once you get 30 days into it you'll have learned a lot of conversational stuff, and by 90 you'll be pretty comfortable in most situations.

Seriously though, "gisting" is a very important part to being able to learn any language, and is an art in and of itself. What do you do when reading something in English and you don't understand a word? It is frustrating none-the-less, but it is a valuable skill. If the unknown word is important to the context, then you'll need to learn it. If it is not, let it go... for now. That won't be the only time that word is used, and there is always time to learn it soon. Remember you are trying to improve your global language abilities [meaning all aspects of it]. Don't get tripped up by the minutia.
And, Monsters, do not forget to specify, when time and place shall serve, that I am an ass.
