Question: Those that are for decriminalizing/legalizing marijuana, do you favor doing that for all drugs or just marijuana?

I'm generally ambivalent about that particular law. I'd be fine with it being either decriminalized and just be a fine/citation like a traffic ticket, or I'd be fine with it being legalized and taxed. Either seems better than potentially taking up space in prisons because some fool decided to get high.

unless you're suggesting it should be illegal because it could increase the odds of someone getting lung cancer, I'm not really sure what your point is.

And if you ARE suggesting it should be illegal for that reason, I hope you're also in favor of banning cigarettes, tanning beds, using steroids and hormones in livestock, birth control pills, any type of industrial complex that puts carcinogens in the air, anything that emits radiation, fake types of sugar, some types of plastics, and well, a whole lot more things beyond what I could possibly list.

I do, however, think that if it were legalized, the taxes on marijuana should be outrageously high, just as I believe they should be on anything that's basically considered a "sin" type of item (cigarettes, alcohol, etc.)

i don't technically have a point, let alone the ability to post without bypassing a ban, but, i've heard alot about how marijuana is supposed to be healthier than tobacco.

it is illegal for a reason. the young just don't acknowledge that their elders had a good reason for doing it. they just like they way that it makes them feel.

i ain't in favor of banning any of it. i just don't want to be forced to have to live next to it.

you complain about carcinogens being put into the air, can you explain why people in the developed countries are living longer lives even though they were heavily exposed to these carcinogens for a good portion of their youth and life? hmm, maybe that's why health care is so expensive now-a-days, they have everybody on the life support machines waiting for the brains to die.

I'd say access to drinkable water, better hygeine, easy availability of food and advanced health care have bypassed the effects of the carcinogens.

And the idea that elders have a good reason to do something is meaningless unless that reason is made known to the following generation and that reason still applies.

It's not a tough proposition to look back to a lot of laws that used to exist that were either wrong, have been made unnecessary, or that are pretty harmless either way but have gone out of vogue.

I'd say cheaper and more efficient transportation of goods, free trade agreements (like NAFTA, which yes, I know was signed into law under a Democratic president), and incredibly cheap labor elsewhere are just as important parts here.

Besides, that whole argument is just silly anyway. The rich aren't being driven away. 36 of the 100 richest people in the world as listed by Forbes are Americans.

In response to the two articles prey4villains posted, I do think simplification of the tax code would be a great idea.

Fewer deductions for both individuals and corporations, but lowering the tax rates so that most people and businesses will pay the same amount. I do feel for small businesses, because they may not have the access to the same type of accounting firms/departments that larger companies do to pay a lower effective tax rate.

I don't know how large or small KoH's business is, but if he's paying the actual rate of 39% that is quoted, then he's getting screwed. It should be easier for not only small businesses but individuals to pay the fair amount.

The best solution isn't just to jack up one rate for the rich or lower rates for the poor or for everyone, it'd be to do a comprehensive change on how taxes are assessed so that the loopholes are gone. I don't want the super wealthy to pay 91% or whatever archaic brought up that was the case in the Eisenhower era but I also find it appalling when I hear that some millionaires and billionaires are effectively paying like 10-15% when I'm probably paying more as a household that is decidedly middle-class in earnings.

Eliminating tax deductions is a bad idea - although at least Twain goes farther than most political analysts who simply call for 'simplifying the tax code' read : raising taxes. Deductions are the way that some individuals have found to lower the extremely oppressive tax burden - we shouldn't begrudge them this minor victory but should seek to widen every tax loophole in the books until we can hop through them.

I don't mean to eliminate all deductions. However, figuring out which tax loopholes for both individuals and for corporations are the biggest reasons for why people are able to get so far below the expected tax bracket they are supposed to be in might be good.

If the rich end up only paying 20% in taxes, I might be okay with that, as long as middle and lower-class people without access to accountants who are trying to find the best ways around paying aren't paying 25% (These numbers are without context, of course. If 20% from the rich is actually less than most pay now and this would add to the deficit, then that's clearly not a good thing).

Really if you are going to be fair the only right thing to do is charge everyone the same tax rate. Not percentage wise, but in dollar amounts. I think $50 a pop out to cover it.
