The M1 has a clip, not a mag. It is basically one step up from a loading strip.
In Korea they used the M1 and the BAR and other WWII surplus. We are still using some WWII munitions to this day.
My SOCOM is pretty much a modern carbine, semi-automatic version of an M14 and I love it.
