In programming code, whenever you make changes to the code, each new change is called a new "revision", and usually given a number. So while users might be using version X of your program, game or whatever, you might be releasing a version that is X+1 soon.
In EE, revision changes are updated to us (to players) as a new reset starts, and the code switches from using the old code, to using the newer revised code - these code are numbered.
