I cannot believe I am going to do this... but a word in the defense of the Johnson Administration (the sound at the end of this post is me punching myself)....

No one really cared about Vietnam. How little yellow people in a remote and resource-poor part of the world live is easy to overlook. HOWEVER, the Soviets were pulling out all the stops to push communism there, as a foothold to spread across south-east asia. Yes, the Soviets clearly believed in the domino theory and so the west was justified in trying to shut it down.

But here is the problem -- if we committed completely to VICTORY in Vietnam which included an invasion of the north, then we were concerned with what the Soviet reaction would be - in EUROPE. There was real concern for sparking a ground war in Europe -- the balance of forces there was very tight.... So all commitments to Vietnam had to first consider the defense of Western Europe. If we (USA) committed too much force to Vietnam then a surge of Chinese troops could tie them (and a significant portion of the US reserves and naval / air forces supporting them) into asia leaving Europe open for a full-scale Soviet invasion without the threat of massive US forces arriving.

So maintaining the fiction of the Geneva accords and the line between the states was a diplomatic way to keeping Soviet from escalating and keeping most of the US military focused on the main effort -- that is to defend Europe.

*gack*

That said, Johnston still did a miserable job of managing the war.

What do you have against people who are visually impaired?

Seriously. My daughter is legally blind. Computers are an incalculable benefit to the blind and visually impaired with screen readers and zoom programs.

My daughter has a program called zoomtext which she sets to about +350-400% so she can see some of what is on the screen and it also reads all text for her. Also it changes the colors to high-contrast combinations.

But typical keyboards dont have a zoom. So high-contrast keyboards make it much easier. We also put tactile clues on certain keys.

So, BUGGER OFF. Let people who know something about actual disabilities create accommodations that make life better while you learn how to STFU.

Shows so much about how our social welfare system is so screwed up...

1. we refuse to let them save any money, so they have to spend everything they get (hence, $400 purse)
2. we provide a huge maze of different programs to provide for every need, so it teaches that no real need is an individual responsibility.
3. all government programs are provided without regard to any effort on the beneficiary part... so again we teach that the government 'owes' everything to the individual, and the individual is responsible for nothing in return.

OK, I watched the video now and am certain it is a boresight device.

At first look at the picture I thought the soldier was talking to a reporter or someone. But you can see he is looking into the eyepiece on the side, and you can see the lens in the front. This crewman (with NCO stripes probably the tank commander, and this part is usually the TC job since it is important to be very precise) is talking the gunner onto the boresight target.

And the flag is there so the device will not be accidentally left in the barrel. Hellava thing to explain what happened to the device after you sent it downrange with your first round....

The device in the turret is NOT a MILES system. MILES transmitters are in the breach, back inside the turret where they are most stable (and you have a lot shorter power cable). Not in the muzzle where they vibrate/bounce and are therefore not as accurate.

This is a boresight device. Used to align the tank sighting systems with where the barrel is actually pointing.

Tank primary sights do not actually lay on the same line as the barrel. This is not like a rifle where you line up... the sights are higher and to the side. So sights looking straight ahead are not looking exactly where the barrel is, and actually must look down and slightly to the left. This creates parallax, where you must determine where the gun and the sight are looking at the same point.

A crewman inserts the boresight device into the muzzle and looks in the sight on the side. Looking here, the crewman directs the gunner to lay the gun on a certain target at a known distance (usually 1500 meters). When the gun is exactly on that target the gunner can then adjust his sights to the exact same point. Now when the gunner lays his sights on a target the gun is adjusted to point to the same target.

And finally, since you are rightly checking credentials, I spent 28 years in the US Army as an armored cavalryman. I have qualified superior with the M60A3 and M1A1 tanks, as well as the M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (and numerious other small arms systems). No, I have no direct experience with French tanks (other than AFVID where they have a disturbing resemblance to soviet systems...). But I an pretty confident that is a boresight device and absolutely certain it is not a MILES transmitter.

Oh wow... been a long time since I thought of that game.

In many ways the mechanics were better than earth... once you got into a good group and could keep it together set after set.

I had a great group, but then got deployed and never found a new group to like. And Tassador kept sending me targets to hit in Earth. :)

You ask either guard "If I ask the OTHER guard which door leads to heaven, which door will he point to?" and then go in the other door.

The truthful guard will have to point to hell, since he is answering what the OTHER guard would lie about.
The lying guard will point to hell, since he is lying about which door the honest guard would point to.

Australian Army
Awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia
Corporal Daniel Alan Keighran, VC

Citation

For the most conspicuous acts of gallantry and extreme devotion to duty in action in circumstances of great peril at Derapet, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan as part of the Mentoring Task Force One on Operation SLIPPER.

Corporal Keighran deployed to Afghanistan in February 2010 with the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. On 24 August 2010 he was a member of a partnered fighting patrol with soldiers of the Afghan National Army’s 1st Kandak, 4th Brigade, 205th (Hero) Corps which was engaged by a numerically superior and coordinated enemy attack from multiple firing points in three separate locations. The attack was initiated by a high volume of sustained and accurate machine-gun and small-arms fire which pinned down the combined Australian and Afghan patrol and caused a loss of momentum.

In the early stages of the attack, and upon realising that the forward elements of the patrol needed effective fire support, Corporal Keighran and another patrol member moved under sustained and accurate enemy fire to an exposed ridgeline to identify enemy locations and direct the return fire of both Australian and Afghan machine guns.

On reaching this position and with complete disregard for his own wellbeing, Corporal Keighran deliberately drew enemy fire by leaving the limited cover he had and moved over the ridgeline in order to positively identify targets for the machine gunners of the combined patrol. After identifying some of the enemy firing positions, Corporal Keighran, under persistent enemy fire continued to lead and mentor his team and move around the ridge to both direct the fire of the Afghan and Australian machine gunners and to move them to more effective firing positions.
As the intensity of enemy fire grew, Corporal Keighran returned to the crest of the ridgeline to identify targets and adjust the fire of Australian Light Armoured vehicles. His actions resulted in the effective suppression of enemy firing points, which assisted in turning the fight in the favour of the combined patrol. Moving to a new position, Corporal Keighran deliberately and repeatedly again exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to assist in target identification and the marking of the forward line of troops for fire support elements whilst simultaneously engaging the enemy.

Realising that the new position provided a better location for the patrol’s joint fire controller, Corporal Keighran moved over 100 metres across exposed parts of the ridgeline, attracting a high volume of accurate enemy fire, to locate and move the fire controller to the new position. He then rose from cover again to expose his position on four successive occasions, each movement drawing more intense fire than the last in order to assist in the identification of a further three enemy firing points that were subsequently engaged by fire support elements.

During one of these occasions, when his patrol sustained an Australian casualty, Corporal Keighran with complete disregard for his own safety, left his position of cover on the ridgeline to deliberately draw fire away from the team treating the casualty. Corporal Keighran remained exposed and under heavy fire while traversing the ridgeline, in order to direct suppressing fire and then assist in the clearance of the landing zone to enable evacuation of the casualty.

Corporal Keighran’s acts of the most conspicuous gallantry to repeatedly expose himself to accurate and intense enemy fire, thereby placing himself in grave danger, ultimately enabled the identification and suppression of enemy firing positions by both Australian and Afghan fire support elements. These deliberate acts of exceptional courage in circumstances of great peril were instrumental in permitting the withdrawal of the combined Australian and Afghan patrol with no further casualties. His valour is in keeping with the finest traditions of the Australian Army and the Australian Defence Force.
