- Due Process
- Presumption of Innocence
- Rule of Law
- Respect for duly elected/appointed authority
- Proportionality (i.e. let the punishment fit the crime)
- The dangers of ochlocracy (tyranny of the majority, mob rule, etc.) and thus civil rights
