This looks like it has a lot of potential.

I only have time to play on one server, so will wait for the Alliance set to finish up first and will try this one out in the next set.

Cheers.

Great suggestion SF.

Tangentially, what about a like/dislike button? It would be interesting to see whose opinions garner support rather than the screaming match we currently have on the forums.

Its a weird one- You'd think I would be a proponent of the recent change set, as yes it gets stale seeing the one strat dominate. But even more that, the traditional oil destock was such a quality of life addition, I find myself still preferring to have kept this element even if it means the status quo doesn't change.

All that is to say I don't think the benefit of removing the traditional oil destock out weighs the quality of life addition it provided to the wider meta of the game.

Also, it is a shame to see the 'best 3' metric rendered obsolete now. It was the best metric to compare the best netters in the game.

I wonder if there are more surgical ways to rebalance some of the strategies? For example, reducing the food/oil production of the Fascist or increasing the PCI of a Republic?

In any case, it has been fun to see how people are playing this set and seeing how the market plays out. Change is inevitable and you can't make everyone happy. I applaud you Slagpit for trying to shake things up in the first place.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment.

As I understand it, players on the alliance server are able to send research pacts to bots and get free tech all set. This strikes me as a completely ridiculous mechanic that should be removed. If it is removed then final NWs will drop somewhat which could impact leaderboards. Should it not be removed then?

Generally speaking we're going to prioritize other factors above leaderboard parity. It's really difficult to have meaningful leaderboards over a 15 year period in the first place and any change isn't fair to a certain degree. For example, suppose the same player managed to win the first ten rounds of alliance. He would have a Best 3 of around 300 M. In the current era a player could play a single country to 901 M NW and not even finish in the top ten. He would then have a higher best 3 than the other player. That's hardly fair, right? At some point I plan to offer a seasonal view of the leaderboards that would be retroactively applied. We'd have metrics that would apply on a yearly basis to Alliance in addition to the overall metrics.

We want players to have multiple feasible options for destocking. That's always been a core design principle. Having a single destocking method be dominant as well as risk-free is the exact opposite of that. Can you explain what the missing quality of life feature here is? You can still do private destocks and you can still burn oil for units. It's just less efficient than before.

Re the leaderboards - yes, 100% agree with you that comparisons between two different periods aren't meaningful as the meta changes over time. Despite that, the 'best 3' was still a good indicator of who were presently the best netters in the game. This view is now lost with the current changes but I think your idea to implement a seasonal view of the leaderboard is a fantastic one. On a side tangent, for average netters like me, simply besting my PB is always a goal I set for myself. Its a bit of a blow to have that water line reset, but hey that's just life innit :)

Re destocking - Yes, you make very valid points. When I speak of quality of life features I guess I'm thinking about how time poor I am now. I'm no longer the teenager who first encountered this game and had the time to log in at any moment. The traditional oil destock suited players like me perfectly as it was the combination of low risk, time efficient, and competitive. If it means I need to invest more time in order to destock competitively, I really don't know if I have the time to play when I have other competing priorities.

In the grand scheme of things, take this response as minor feedback as overall I think you are doing a great job. I think Tertius summed it up best- the full effect of the change set will reveal itself over the next few sets and it'll be interested to see how people adapt their strategies to maximise their end nws.

I think there are more subtle ways to make the FFO->TMBR pattern more equitable with casher, techer, indy.

Yeah I agree with Andrew and others re retaining the ability to drop land. I imagine many are like me, who don't have much free time, so anything that makes playing the game less time intensive is encouraged. The ability to oil destock is definitely one of these.

Hi Slagpit.

Thanks for thinking about how the server can be improved for the enjoyment of everyone.

I am a big advocate of creating a separate netgaining server for alliances and believe this would go a long way towards addressing the tension we've seen in the past.

In terms for the positive/negatives, I think you've captured most of it. I've added a few more thoughts that came to mind.

Positive netgaining experiences:
* Competing with your friends to get the highest individual NW
* Competing with the entire server to get the highest individual NW
* Working together to win average networth or triple crown
* Outrunning retals against a smaller clan
* Making a big retal as a small clan
* Competing against yourself to beat your PB NW
* Competing to break NW records for a selected strategy
* Netting is a time efficient way to stay connected to this community for many of us who are time poor

Negative netgaining experiences:
* Not being able to successfully netgain due to war, suiciders, or other issues
* Losing an individual competition to a country that was heavily aided by their clan
* Strategies aren't well balanced meaning farmers are OP

Positive warring experiences:
* Stonewalling successfully
* Leading and participating in and leading war chats
* Planning and pulling off a successful FS
* Winning a war, especially when the odds were against you
* Catching up with old friends while idling in war rooms

Negative warring experiences:
* Getting woken up in the middle of the night to stonewall
* Your warring country that you worked hard to build gets killed in ten seconds
* Spending most of the reset not actually warring
* Not having anything to do after winning a war
* Getting FSed by a larger clan with no hope of victory
* Smaller play base often means there can only be one warchat which always seems to be at an ungodly hour
* Smaller clans often won't have enough turns to complete KR which means kills get dragged out and honestly feels pointless
* Warring is such a time investment and many of us are no long teenagers with unlimited time

I don't frequent the boards too often but you've always struck me as a person who could be reasoned with and one who had mostly balanced views of both sides.

A loss for the community but wishing you all the best in chasing this exciting new chapter of your life.

ClanGDI strikes me as an overly complex attempt to force two opposed camps to exist on the same server. So why not untangle this mess and come up with a solution that satisfies both camps?

Create a server for those alliances solely interested in netting while keeping Alliance for those that want to war. I'd be interested in seeing which server flourishes, for the communities sake, I genuinely hope both.

This satisfies everyone. You'd be separating factions that have driven the server to its current toxic levels. Netters who have quit out of frustration will return. Warmongers can war to their hearts content. I know the argument in the past has been that the Primary server is where you go if you want to net, but that is a solo server, and for many, the enjoyment comes in netting with friends under the same banner.

Seems like a way simpler solution then having to build a complex ClanGDI mechanism. Just my 2 cents.

Hmm.. yes I was only just made aware of this thread. I, and I suspect many others, do not frequent AT because it has become such a toxic place.

I question whether a vote consisting of 25 people is representative of the community. I would have liked an ingame msg to participate but alas, it seems the die has been cast. I hope those that remain got what they wanted.
