You need both. But how much military or what type really depends on your strategy. Grabbing land or exploring? You don't want so much military that it costs too much. But you need enough to defend what you have built already.

I agree with the others. Casher or farmer are best for beginners. That doesn't mean they aren't as good techer or indy.

I prefer farmer myself. Get a lot of military tech and you won't be reliant on the public market. You won't have to worry about running out of food or cash.

I think you should be all jetter casher with zero spies.

I usually try not to piss off the big boys. Usually it's better to look fat in the beginning of the set. That way your big grabs are retals later in the set.

Late grabs don't really benefit. Unless your grabbing for cash. But only then on cash fat bots. They usually fund my endgame in express.
