Unless its reinforced I might want to be in a wood structure. The wood tends to bow and give and bend back and forth in the wind. The brick/cinder blocks they stay and stay, until they dont.

+1

The main challenge for buildings isn't absorbing the blowing of the wind, it's dealing with the suction.

Problem in New England is the age of many of the homes means they're built well below base flood elevations (term we used in cat adjusting when doing floods). I'd venture to guess almost all of those houses currently flooding are well below BFEs. But those that are total losses can only be rebuilt above the flood zone BFEs so they'll probably be elevated in the future.

Not surprised some idiots out in a canoe. I remember people taking inner tubes down a creek near a childhood home in West Harford. Every time there was a bad rain storm they would come tubing down the creek as it swelled up to 2-3x it's usual depths.

Watching people here in Carolina worry and fret and panic has been most entertaining for a Florida boy like myself. I've long lost count of the number of storms I've been through.

thats funny because ive lived in FL and NC and ive been through much more violent storms in NC. the reason they panic is because they have been through Fran and Hugo and the likes bro. this one may not be as bad, but first of the season its still going to fluff some fluff up

Storm of the century made landfall 10 miles from my house. I lost two classmates and two neighbors, three from drowning and one from a heartattack. Lost a house as well, though thankfully not the one we were living in. Also lost any and all fear of storms that night.

Would you have been in New Orleans going "yawn, I am florida boy?"
You are one of those that refuses to evacuate, putting First Responder's lives in danger later to save yours.
I have been through a few hurricanes (I was born in FL), and I never would make fun of how others and other areas react over a hurricane.
This goes back to everyone on the west coast making fun of everyone on the east coast with the earthquake last week.

Nope, being a Florida boy I know when to get the hell out of dodge. Got the hell out of Ivan's way the year before Katrina came and redefined what hurricane damage looks like.

I was on the Bolivar Pennisula on a business trip shortly before Ivan hit.

Was amazed at the devestation there ... nothing remained of the houses we were staying in or thinking of investing in.

The communities of vacation cottages were completely gone.

Thought that was the worst, but that was before Katrina. I hope we never have to experience one like that again.

Just got off the beach, had a few minutes from my last call which was a beach house. Almost a 13 foot erosion cliff, and the current beach is about 6 feet wide, it was about 300 feet wide :(

Lost our house in the storm. Lived in an area of town that NEVER flooded in the last 100 years. Storm hit, water came up and debris clogged the rivers... When the bridges let go it released a 27 foot tall "wave" that ended up bringing about 8 feet of water over a 3 mile stretch... That stayed for 4-5 hours. About 70 homes ruined total.
