Visionary for sure, but his achievements are going to be greatly exaggerated in the next few days (they were even before his death)

A loss anyway.

I was never a fan of most Apple products, but you have to respect what he did with the company in the last decade. Apple products became a fad that everyone had to have regardless of the price or frequency of newer model releases. He branched out from computers to create or dominate other markets.

His death is definitely a loss of one in the most influential people in recent years.

I have no love for Apple and no need for their products. Still, I have some small measure of respect for how Steve Jobs always stayed true to what he thought was the right thing to do - even when I'm totally convinced he was wrong - and for that at least I'll pour one in his memory tonight.

His company certainly hasn't done anything of any value in decades, but he was a major factor in the the computer. He was an amazing human being, and while the "i" everything is a good way of labeling fluffty products, he was an amazing person who changed the world we live in. Very few people will ever be able to claim 1/100 as much. The world is a little but worse off today, but thankfully someone else will come along.

also, anyone who wants to watch a really good movie on Steve Jobs, look for Pirates of Silicon Valley. It's a movie about the early days of Microsoft and Apple. Like the Social Network, but better.

Pirates of Silicon Valley agreed that is a good movie. I also like the new one that recently came out about facebook. Good stuff. One good thing- this does open up innovation to others.

open up innovation to others??

that doesn't make any sense...

innovation breads innovation; having one less innovator is a net loss for society as a whole.

ya, jobs was very important in the early days of home computing and with the boom in consumer devices which started in the early 2000s

Jobs, Gates, Wozniak, Allen, Brin, Page, Yang, Filo, and MAYBE Zuckerberg (if you believe that Facebook was 'first' social networking platform) are all pioneers of the modern computing era, IMO

Although I still say Turing was probably more important overall to the field of computing. If you don't know who Turing is, look it up -- the server is hosted on a Turing machine.

He was super influential for the PC, hell you could even argue that windows stole some of his ideas.

And to say Jobs hasn't done anything of value for decades is kind of silly. Have you been living under a rock? He only changed how the world takes in digital media. He re-invented the phone and practically invented the tablet computer.
