DRM doesn't stop people from pirating, it just makes people who buy your game pissed off

games check if they are legit versions and if server is down that check can't be made so games won't work.

Aside from the "you bought the game and want to play it on your own time" factor?

they seem to work when my xbox isn't connected, but that's probably because the xbox has a secret satellite connection to the mothership that i'm not supposed to know about.

Only thing i've bought that requires a 'net connection is starcraft II, and i think you can technically play single player when bnet is down, just it won't register your progress with your account or something

Pirating is as much stealing as you giving your neighbor an exact copy of the book you just bought; or giving him the original while you keep the copy.

you bought it, so it is yours and as such you can do whatever the fluff you want with it, that is the definition of owning something.

we can go a little further:

You buy a book, you have perfect memory so once you read it, a perfect copy of it is made in your brain and as such you no longer need the original, so you give it to your friend, with has the same perfect memory, with in turn does the same, by the end, everyone will own the book in their minds.

But when you buy a game or other software, you don't actually own it, you're just "leasing it from the lease-holder (the corporation)" until such time the lease expires and then you have to pay more to keep using it. It spells it out quite clearly in the EULA!

I've stopped buying software games. Hell, I've stopped PLAYING software games for the most part because I don't have the time or patience anymore.

My Games folder is like this

SNES: my favorite games of with some I still own (wish I could say the same about my snes)
PSx: My favorite 12 games, of with guess what, I have their disks in a box somewhere.
Mass Effect 2 (downloaded pirated version, deleted, and bought original game)
Pre Ordered Mass effect 3
Downloaded, played and deleted Mass effect 1
Skyrim downloaded pirate ver, deleted, bought original ver
Kingdoms of Amalur (Steam demo, will probably delete it)
The witcher 2 (downloaded, and deleted shortly aka no longer there)
Dead Space 2 (downloaded pirate ver, not played yet)
Dead Space 1 played on my friend Xbox 360.

If I like it, I keep/buy it, if I don't is shortly deleted, you can say I can't borrow luxury items, but you can't permanently destroy every trace of them either, with is exactly what I am doing in the end.

Data isn't the same as matter (food/clothes/etc)

DRM actually increases piracy as people get pissed off with things like this and go to a cracked copy without the same restrictions. It's like the anti-piracy ads at the movie theatre only affect those who go to the cinema. The same applies to unlocking your smartphone. The ability is there, but needlessly restricted by corporations looking to maximize profit margins.

that's BS. just another excuse to steal something that they don't need.

if you want to be technical it's copyright infringement, not theft. plus depending on where you live theres the EULA violation, not to mention the DMCA violation for circumventing the DRM (even 3rd party no-cd patches).

so if you're going to call it a crime, at least get the crimes straight ;)

blizzard actually removed DRM for sc2 because of this exact reason.

i know cuz i was in that meeting when we were discussing about DRM stuff ;P

love my 2 copies of Diablo 2 LoD. even though i only bought the second copy just so i could transfer items without using battle-net.

Quoted for truth. I don't have time to play a lot of games so I have no problem buying them when I do. Until AC2 came along and I pirated it rather than deal with the DRM crap.
