Over the past few years we've seen quite an increase in hurricanes tornado's floods and many other nature disasters. We're the mayans right after all. Is it all going to hell in 2012? :-P

No, there's always natural disasters and the only reason why they are more memorable now is due to the media and how "close to home" it all feels now.

I watched a couple of things on the history channel about this. It has nothing to do with natural disasters.

It has to do something with our placement in the solar system with the sun.

NASA actually said we will be facing the hot spot of the sun in 2012 and will see an increase of solar flares...thats what they said NASA said on the history channel anyway.

Not saying I beleive but I wish 2013 would hurry up and get here so we know it isn't going to happen ;-).

Due to your head getting so big, the Earth is shifting to compensate. This happens every so many thousands of years. One guy thinks he knows it all, his head swells up, and sends Earth into shambles. These earthquakes are the result of the Earth shifting to compensate for the change in mass (due to your swelling head). The hurricanes are because your swelling head has changed the earths gravitational pull towards the Earth. It is all your fault Makinso. The Mayans be darned.

DeerHunter, I guess for us to compensate for these changes we should take your fat had and toss it into space in an attempt to counter Makinso's fat head.

Nah no nonsense predictions, its all a load of rubbish on par with the bible and other loony predictions. :)

But we do see more of these natural occurancies simply becaue media is a lot more worldwide and its something that sells lots of newspapers. (probably not the whole truth but might have something to it)

Simply put over the 4.54 billion years the earth has existed you probably had periods with way more disasters than this, and probably also some with less. But overall its just nature doing what nature does.

And if they were so smart why aren't they here to say I told you so..... this thread is a bit meh. Look at the scale of natural disasters over the last 100 years there has been nothing catastrophic. And records only go so far back to say as to what happened on small scales. Which as inhumane as this may sound earthquakes and hurricanes are. Compared to what's happened in the past.
Yellowstone.
The big one in Indonesia which I can't remember 25m years ago
Ice ages
Comets
Poles switching
Massive temperature increases. (global warming please don't go there as this is one of the few times in earths history that there has been ice at both poles without a ice age and a FYI it was much hotter during the mid Jurassic period as the dinosaurs were coming to a end)

Those are examples which would cause a world wide massive life loss. But the end of the world in 2012 is a waste of time.

To actually destroy the earth is almost impossible. It's just too big. And something from space big enough should have been detected by now as it needs to be of a similar size to earth to hit hard enough that after millions of years it wouldn't reform due to its gravity. It's one thing to not spot a asteroid but a planet.....
And for sunspots and black holes they aren't suitable arguements. Our sun isn't hot enough to ignite the atmosphere from where it is. And I'm out of arguement for now

Here, Neil Degrasse Tyson, one of the world's most eminent astro-physicists, describes our possible death by a giant asteroid in 2035. 2012 is bullfluff. If you want worldwide extinction, pray for 2035. Buncha' conspiracy theorist bullfluffers...

And yes, this is actually scientifically legitimate.

EDIT: 2029, not 2035.

Mayans didnt take into account that Ceaser would create leap years. According to the Mayan calander and all the addition days added since then, it should be the year 2013 something.

Think about it.
