what are some ways someone could have exposed me to a virus either through earthempires or irc?

less than two days ago, just around the time a lot of drama was going on around here, my fiance's computer and my computer both received viruses from an unknown source.


the quick look yesterday by the computer guy showed risk from this site and irc.

i'm completely dumbfounded that someone would go as far as to commit a blatantly illegal act such as that, and i just want it to be known that i will pursue them to the fullest extent of the law.

also, as a guy who works in computers, it seems like 90% of viruses these days are not targeted in the sense you're speaking of, but rather a result of hijacked or otherwise malicious banner ads, javascripts, etc.

otherwise, to answer your question, there is no way that somebody could have exposed you to a virus in ee or irc unless you clicked the "Lol i accept your file and will run it without thinking" button. but then, you're smarter than that, right? :P

define "showed risk" for me please, i know that at one point a lot of folks on ee got a virus from a hijacked google ad on ee, but that wasn't like pang or qz said "HEY GOOGLE WE WANT MALICIOUS ADS PLS"

its not been 1% as bad with EE as with E2025 under OMAC

Vic, apart from receiving dodgy files, a worm would be pretty much the only way possible of getting a virus on your machine unless it involved sites other than earth

this site will show up as a HUGE risk because its privately owned and hosted

with IRC, as a head in several earth alliances (Steel, LAF, FBI, GentsClub, UCN and Omega in the old days, i'm quite surprised that you'd never heard of a botnet before

Vic, your computer guy doesn't sound like he knows what he is talking about. Find me in IRC or in RD and I'll try and answer some questions for you.

Unless you've been doing some file transfers over mIRC (which can be done), or any other IRC client that allows DCC transfers, you can scratch your IRC client off the list. As for EE being a possible source from where your virus came from, while it may be possible, you would need to know the name & type of virus to even begin to conceive where it may have originated.

Have you opened any suspicious e-mails? And do you use anything like Microsoft Outlook to check your e-mail? Watch out for e-mails containing attachments, or images... also watch for files with double extensions, e.g.: Pic1234.gif.exe
