I guess it's only fair since we took all of your hockey teams. It's more profitable for them to play in front of empty arenas in Arizona and Tennessee than packed houses in Quebec or Winnipeg.

FYI, we got the Winnipeg one back. And your economic reasons are pretty incorrect from what I recall....

Not that you probably care, but the key reason those teams moved to the states was that the Canadian dollar was fluff and all players demanded USD salaries. This was also in a non-salary capped era where teams like the Leafs and Rangers and Red Wings just threw money at players -- especially declining vet players -- not unlike baseball teams do now. Also, Winnipeg and Quebec City were not selling out before they moved. Their cities were small and they struggled to fill the arenas on a regular basis (other than probably weekend games). The Ottawa Senators barely managed to get through that but now they're doing OK although I'd still consider them to be a budget team compared to a lot of other Canadian teams.

Now with the new cap rules and the limited revenue sharing they do it has evened the playing field a lot to the point that smaller market teams in both the US and Canada can put together competitive hockey teams without breaking the bank.

Also, Arizona is certainly not profitable and I don't think it ever has. It's been on life support from the league (i.e., owned by the league after bankruptcy) a couple of times and has gone through several ownership groups that have just sucked money out of local government with no real return on it. Nashville is a normally a very budget conscious team as well but has consistently put out a better product on the ice. The key problem has been Gary Betman's insistence on forcing hockey to be played in regions that don't actually like hockey (Atlanta, Nashville, 2 teams Florida, Arizona, Dallas, Carolina to name a few) in hopes that it will take off. It's sorta worked but it's drawn the ire of most true hockey fans who just want to see a quality product on the ice.

The new Las Vegas team is an interesting case as I highly doubt they will ever have any decent fan following but will be propped up by the tourism industry who will buy tickets to give to guests. I don't think Las Vegas' team will be much different than Arizona in terms of competitiveness for the first decade+ of it's existence. If I went to a game it'd probably be to cheer the opposing team as part of a wider Vegas trip.

Also, Braden, the pension plan doesn't own the Leafs anymore. It's Rogers and Bell. I don't necessarily think that's better than the pension plan or Harrold Ballard but at least they require a winning product to improve engagement on their other services.
