But how can you have only a little?

The real impact of the all of the tyr/tech war starts was to almost completely crash the tech market early, pushing non-warring countries to play other strategies instead of converting to techer. This, combined with warring techers putting turns to hitting rather than teching and war techers dying has caused the supply to dry up.

Restarts are likely to be a little less of an issue as even if they had no tech, they'd still not have the income to significantly affect the market. Right now, I'd guess the main war techs are selling to landgrabbing original countries (both those at war and otherwise) rather than to restarts.

Look at the buy orders on the market: the minimum price being paid for most techs now is well over $3000. The issue here isn't solely of techers jacking their prices, it is that there isn't much of a tech supply relative to the demand (and the buy orders prove the demand).

Seriously: the question isn't "should I buy tech?" It is instead "how much tech should I buy, given the price compared to other things?" It's a question of alternatives, not a yes/no. Tech should always be in the mix. And, right now, with military prices as high as they are tech is a worthwhile investment even at the prices on the market now.

You may not be tempted, but that is honestly your own loss; you're at a comparative disadvantage to the countries putting money into tech.

If you're at war buy mil strat and weapons tech, seriously. 10% mil strat is the equivalent of an extra attack every 10 turns, while weapons tech reduces your military costs hugely by letting you send less while making hitting you more expensive. With military prices as they are, investing in tech is a no brainer if you're at war regardless of the tech prices; you don't need to spend that much for it to have an effect and result in savings.

I'll admit it: I am teching this reset and I would really, really like it if some casher would please, please, please buy my tech right now. Please?

However, that honestly has nothing to do with what I'm saying. Until you're stockpiling, the only worthwhile investments are those that increase your production, either by increasing your land (mil spending for landgrabbing, or related techs) or by investing in production technology. The faster your production goes up, the faster your income goes up, and the more you're able to continually invest in growing your country until you stockpile.

Tech used to be the biggest difference between the alliances that would compete regularly for TNW and those that wouldn't, and I doubt that's changed.

Buying tech is always the right choice if you're not a techer, regardless of the cost. Yes, prices are a bit ugly right now, but so long as you have any extra cash investing in an increase in production is the best thing you can do, and should be done as soon as possible.

That way you add an element of - how long to wait before surprise FS'ing the other guy, do it earlier and you have less of an advantage -> day 10 wars become day 15, day 14 wars become day 21

That sounds interesting.

I remember seeing some survey results a little while ago that showed opinion in France on who contributed the most to victory in WWII: it went from a huge majority saying it was the Soviets right after the war to a similar majority saying the US in the present day.

What we see now colours our perception of events a lot, even for something as recent as WWII. I'd be entirely unsurprised to find that, for written records especially, much of what we "know" is wrong as not only do we have to deal with our own biases when examining records but also the bias of the author of the historical documents used as sources.

aponic: did you know you're the person I've known longest online?

I think I may have mentioned this once before, but it has been over 15 years since we were in DDF together or something like that. It has always been damn cool to be able to catch up with you when I've popped my head back into earth every so often, and if this is the end for you here, I wish you all the best as you're damn awesome and deserve the best.

Yeah I played TDZK, and ID was originally an old TDZK alliance so it was a landing spot for a lot of old TDZKers. I have no idea if they're still around, but that's probably where I'd play again if I were going to. Good people.

You played in STS for a bit, right?

I actually played EVE for a bit, with Imperial Dreams back when they had some 0 sec space (no idea if they still do). I quickly decided it would be a bad idea for me to continue playing, as that game had the potential to occupy me way more than any other did; it would have consumed me :P

Things are going mostly ok, prepping for a move (just a local one).

You?

You make no justification for your position, you just get up in arms about name calling (because of course, calling someone an idiot and an asshole on an internet forum is a far issue than telling depressed people they should die, how dare I offed you) and further attempt to troll.

Look, if you take a position that suggests you're a poor excuse for a human (which is a good description of someone so obviously lacking in empathy) then you deserve to be called on it.

Do you idiots have any idea how many people are affected by mental illnesses, of which anxiety and depression are the most common? Chances are someone you know is suffering from mental illness and saying stuff like that has a the potential to have a real negative effect on them.

Even if that's what you honestly think, there's absolutely zero reason to SAY it unless you're an asshole as it costs you NOTHING to keep your opinions to yourself while saying things like that absolutely have an effect.

I got reminded this game was still up and running by a friend, so I thought I'd stop by and say hi. Cool to see this still going strong and kind of crazy to see so many names I recognize so many years later.

I'll be idling in the IRC channel for probably the next few days if anyone feels like catching up a little.
