Yep... So to advance, US needs:

1. Win, OR
2. Tie, OR
3. Ghana - Portugal tie, OR
4. US loss by 1 and Portugal win by fewer than 4, OR
5. US loss by 2 and Portugal win by fewer than 3, OR
6. US loss by 3 and Portugal win by fewer than 2, OR
7. US loss by 1 and Ghana win by 1

If the sum of the US loss and Ghana win is 3 or greater, Ghana advance (e.g. US lose by 1 and Ghana wins by 2, 1+2=3, Ghana advance on goal differential)

If the sum of the US loss plus Portugal win is equal to or greater than 6, Portugal advance (e.g. US lose by 2 and Portugal win by 4, 2+4=6, Portugal advance on goal differential).

If sum of US loss plus Portugal win is equal to 5, it goes to tie breaking rules that I'm not too familiar with (e.g. US lose by 3, Portugal win by 2, 3+2=5, US and Portugal would both have goal differential of -2). They both tied each other, so there's no head to head there. Not sure what the next rule is.

I was thoroughly impressed yet disappointed by that game! Well played game by all... I did feel bad for Ronaldo -- some missed opportunities but his last touch of the game to make the play was pretty epic. But by all means, I didn't want to see that.... US of course played amazing and I really thought they had it :/. If only .......... Well that is the means of this group.

The game was a gut-wrenching first half, exciting second half, incredibly frustrating last 10 seconds.

And the next two (US-Germany and Ghana-Portugal) run at the same time! Definitely made Thursday more interesting.

there were more important matches and tournaments won in the last seconds.

The last UCL final - Real Madrid scores in the last seconds to win the game in the extra-time.
Manchester United - Bayern Munched ( UCL final )
`90 - 0-1
`94 - 2-1

Goals in injury time happens. I am angry it happen against SUA`s, after they did such a good game(but remember, this work both ways ... there might be a time when SUA will be the deliverer and not the receiver). I am sure the Brazil WC already means more "soccer" fans in USA overall. There is enough drama here ... and you guys love drama and happy endings. I hope the end will be happy :P - there are a lot of chances for that.

The group stage best drama will be group C and D pairs in the next round. Everybody wants to meet Costa Rica and not Italy/Uruguay. Columbia makes it`s life harder by wining the group - no matter what.
That would be a show worth seeing...

It's the total goals scored by each team, so in the first scenario (US loses 3-0 and Portugal wins 2-0) they're still tied (both scored 4 goals total) and they simply draw lots. If US loses by 2 but Portugal wins by 3 Portugal goes to next stage. Assuming that US or Ghana don't score goals... you get the picture.

no one at this world cupa is able to beat Ghana with 2 or 3 + in a game that matters for Ghana.

Usa just needs to not loose big time.

Yeah Rufus I just read up on that now. Head to head doesn't matter, which is stupid. The difference between goals scored in a US loss and goals scored in a Ghana win can not be more than 1... so if Ghana wins 3-2, US must score at least 2 in a 1-goal loss to advance. Head to head should count first. The US beat Ghana, there's no scenario in which Ghana should advance if tied with the US.

I was talking about USA-Portugal tie-breaker. Before the "total goals scored" rule there's also the head-to-head rule you mentioned, irrelevant because USA and Portugal made an equal match but very important if Ghana beats Portugal. So if Ghana wins 3-2 and USA loses by no more than one goal then both have goal differences of 0, but head to head score takes precedence and USA goes to next stage. So to recap: Total points, goal difference if tied, direct match result if still tied, total goals scored, toss a coin.

Rufus, that's not true. If Ghana wins 3-2 and US loses 1-0 or 2-1, Ghana advances on goals scored. There is no head to head. The US needs to score at least 1 goal fewer than Ghana scores if they lose by 1 and Ghana win by 1.

Tiebreaker 1 is goal differential
Tiebreaker 2 is total goals scored
Tiebreaker 3 is points against teams involved, this is the head to head tie breaker

Only if Ghana and USA are tied in goal differential AND goals scored will the US win over Ghana give them the tiebreak. That's ridiculous. Head to head should come BEFORE goals for, but it doesn't. Goals for is ahead of head to head record.

Too little too late for them I feel. If US loses by 1, Portugal would need to win by 5. If US loses by 2, Portugal would have to win by 4. If US loses by 3, Portugal would have to win by 3. It's going to be tough for them.

It's unlikely that this letter will win me many friends or even garner much attention. However, writing it is the only way I know to bring strength to our families, power to our nation, and health to our cities. Let me begin by citing a range of examples from the public sphere. For starters, if USA's plan to demand special treatment that, in many cases, borders on the ridiculous is to be discouraged then the wisest course of action is to point out the glaring contradiction between USA's idealized view of allotheism and reality. Before we start down that road I ought to remind you that its bunco games are continually evolving into more and more illiberal incarnations. Here, I'm not just talking about evolution in a simply Darwinist sense; I'm also talking about how we need to shed a little light on some of the ignorant prejudices that reside within USA's pea-sized brain. Why? Because of what's at stake: literally everything.

Everywhere it's gone, USA has tried to intensify race hatred. It can happen here, too. My concern and outrage are not directed solely at USA, but at all those who seek to galvanize a two-faced hysteria, a large-scale version of the wrongheaded mentality that can lay waste to the environment, . But even if we disregard all that and examine only USA's lackadaisical diatribes, this seems to me to be enough to show that I am not a robot. I am a thinking, feeling, human being. As such, I get teary-eyed whenever I see USA bring denominationalism to this country in the name of anti-denominationalism. It makes me want to confront and reject all manifestations of wowserism, which is why I'm so eager to tell you that it would be charitable of me not to mention that I can no longer brook USA's wily codices. Fortunately, I am not beset by a spirit of false charity so I will instead maintain that many people are incredulous when I tell them that it intends to doctor evidence and classification systems and make dodgy generalizations to support pusillanimous, preconceived views. “How could USA be so clumsy?”, they ask me. “It doesn't seem possible.” Well, it is really possible, and now I'll explain exactly how USA plans to do it. But first, you need to realize that I can reword my point as follows. USA is environmentally favored and genetically predisposed to twisting our entire societal valuation of love and relationships beyond all insanity.

USA is a consummate liar. Even so, I have a soft spot for benighted crooks: a bog not too far from here. We have much to fear from USA. Personally, I'm afraid that some day, it'll impale us on a Morton's Fork: Either we let it turn public education into a fuzzy, soft, touchy-feely experience whose purpose is socialization, not learning, or it'll support international crime while purporting to oppose it. Regardless of which we choose, it's indeed a tragedy that USA's goal in life is apparently to grant a free ride to the undeserving. Here, I use the word “tragedy” as the philosopher Whitehead used it. Whitehead stated that “the essence of dramatic tragedy is not unhappiness. It resides in the solemnity of the remorseless working of things,” which I interpret as saying that USA's associates sincerely don't want us to say “no” to USA's parvanimous, vilipensive capilotades. That'd be too much of a threat to aspheterism, cannibalism, and all of the other duplicitous things they worship. Clearly, they prefer shaming my name. Now that this letter has come to an end, let me remind you that it was intended to provide an accurate, even-handed, and balanced discussion of USA and its lamentations. Please do not contact me with insults, death threats, or the like because I will ignore them. If you disagree with my arguments or can provide further information about USA, please contact me and I will endeavor to make any necessary corrections to this letter.

Well this is one of the few lame parts soccer ( football ) has. All the competitions around world have different tie-breaker systems. Some, direct match counts. Others - goals scored. There are some competitions where if you have tie in both categories - team that is ranked superior in FIFA / UEFA rankings qualifies. Or teams that have less yellow / red cards ( fair-play promotion ).

It is lame. the order should be in all competitions:

1.Direct Match
2.Goals scored
3.Fair-play in that competition ( cards )
4.Fifa Rankings

In case 3 teams finis the same number of points it gets even more fluffed up. Imagine USA with 9 points ( 3 victories with 2-1 ) and Germany/ Ghana / Portugal each ones with 3 points, victories against each others with 1-0.
