Delaying the Keystone decision is one of the best things you could have done for Canada.

I'm fairly certain the Pacific Gateway pipeline will be approved now, likely with expedition. So now instead of selling an extra 700k barrels a day to the US at the rock bottom north American crude prices, we will sell at international spot prices which are significantly higher.

So thank you for helping us recieve more bang for our barrels. This will help our fiscal position, and economy a lot more in the long run.

that will never happen, since quebec has regulations regarding the export of syrup, and 80% of all maple syrup is produced in Quebec (My friend from highschool owns a maple company and I used to work for him, so I know about these issues too!)

You can still get their syrup, just not their good stuff.

Their regulations prohibit the export of their higher quality syrups, they can still export the junk stuff.

For the high quality stuff you'll have to either travel to Canada to get it, or buy it from a producer from Ontario or Vermont (the only other places where any significant producer occurs).

don't get h4 started on syrup... he will own your with his maple knowledge. I think he's only a leafs fan because they come from the maple tree.

I absolutely agree -- let's sell our oil to Asia. We should be expanding our port facilities on the west coast anyway (and I am told we already are). We have every incentive to start selling more energy to Asia and less to the states. The states has every incentive to get our crude down to their refineries, yet they are blocking it.

Not to mention, as a long-term customer, Asia will likely be a better market than the USA. The US is going to need to get off hydrocarbons at SOME point. That will happen far before Asia does.

Burning maples actually does keep the house nice and toasty... Hardwood FTW! ... Only when it's old and dying though. It makes me sad to see Maples cut too young.

ok it's a syrup thread now.

we should learn the maple secrets from the Quebec folks to make our own high-quality syrup! I already know a guy who owns a maple farm too (do we all know people who own maple farms?)

So can a brother get some of this fancy syrup mailed to him.

none, the sugar is natural and already there (maple syrup is a natural sugar, and is far more healthy than processed sugars, which is one of the reasons why it is starting to grow in demand internationally).

They boil off water to turn the sap into syrup, approximately 200 parts water is boiled off for every 1 part of syrup that remains afterwards.

(there are other stages after that, but that is the big one).

Raf: Aunt Jemima isn't maple syrup, it is "table syrup" an inferior quality product both in taste and in nutrition (in fact it has almost none of the positive nutritional qualities of maple syrup)

So how much does this fancy super syrup cost?

That is an insane amount of sap to make syrup. How much production can you realistically get from one tree?

Depends on the size of the tree, whether it has been tapped previously etc.

But on average I'd say, maybe 150 - 200 mL of syrup per tree in a season? (Sap only runs when it reaches -3ish in the evening and then over 0 during the day, with bigger variances = better. Thus it only runs in and around the early and late stages of winter).

H4, it's not just the oil - it's the fact that the companies doing the transporting have demonstrated their complete refusal to make the pipes free from incident. The few pipes that the keystone company does have in America have been a failure of epic proportions.

These pipes travel over the water for literally our entire country. When forced to make the choice between your oil and our water, water wins every time.

Why are you trying to justify the decision?

I have come out in clear support of it in this thread. I think this is a good outcome for Canada. It will probably lead to use selling more to Asia at a higher price.

I am calling bullfluff - I'd like to see evidence of these 'epic' failures.

Free from incidents? Naive much?
