Almost every time my roommate boots up his comp it freezes halfway thru loading the the bios status bar. He'll have to power off then power back up (once or twice) before it goes thru and loads up. What might be causing this and how would I go about fixing it? Update the bios?

update the bios, replace the cmos battery maybe, check the bios logs (if there are any) to see if it has a record of something breaking
sounds like something hardwareish is crapping out. not familiar with much else able to interrupt bios.

I'll try updating the bios. Let ya know if that solves it.

Last time I saw a BIOS with a loading bar was on an old Gateway circa 1998...

Well the loading bar is a quick test of hardware. So I'd run a memory test at least, and disconnect any external devices.

fujitsu has that load bar too and 1 of reasons why it stops is faulty harddrive, other possibilities are faulty memory/ies or even motherboard etc.when doing cold boot its possible that harddrive won't start spinning early enuf so computer won't start normally.

See if there is an option for quick boot, and turn it off. It might show you more info as it goes through the POST.

I had an issue like this with a linux box, but it happened at varying times in the load up and randomly while it was already booted. It was a fluffty computer so we didn't spend the time to figure it out really, but it's most likely a hardware issue, our guess was a dying power supply.

I would say it definitely is a hardware issue, given where the problem occurs.

Probably the system not paying the proper toll for the north bridge, reboot recalculates the route through the south bridge and on to never never land

I'd probably think along the lines of tertius, power fault somewhere

You can usually press the ESC key or some other key (try random function keys or the DEL key) to get rid of the loading bar and show the actual BIOS POST screen.

As always, the solution is one of three things:

1) Make sure it's plugged in
2) Restart your computer
3) Check for an update

And yes, I realize its already been solved, but in my time doing IT, it was always one of those things.

Or corruption. Lots of that ;)
