But seriously I didn't do any research on them before I bought... Got home took it out made a few cups with the free packs they give you with it... then realize you cant use non-branded cups with it because they put an IR scanner in the machine that scans the packages. HOW lame lol.

Anyone else get this by surprise?

A friend of mine opened it up, cut a certain wire (it was green), and disabled the scanner. He said it's a pretty simple DIY job. Just look for instructions.

It's just a barcode scanner -- all you need to do is take a barcode off one of the cups, tape it to the bottom of the scanner area so it always gets scanned.... then use whatever cups you want :)

yeah. barcodes are simple technology anyway. As was said above, just use a barcode from something similar.

Yeah I'm aware of the work around it still doesn't make up for the fact that its complete bullfluff.

Also one of the big points of it is to be convenient and easy... Well trying to do workarounds is not convenient and makes it less easy.

I am sure some third party made some cheap cups that caused malfunctions in the machines. Easiest way to prevent people from using fluff that doesn't belong is to restrict options. The general public it too stupid to make informed decisions required with options as varied as k-cup variety.

<3 my Keurig but I have the older model. I was looking at the 2.0 but decided to stick with the one I have.

No Mr. Ford they saw their branded k-cup sales declining and the knock off cups sales increasing. So naturally they tried to come up with a way to prevent that.
