Last set I gather was the first ever Primary set with under 100 players end Set. :/ I cant imagine what it would be like if this was 1998. I have just gone into grade 9 or 10. l am going to play my rainbow on my lunch break, I do not have many skills nor the effort yet to figure them out. Instead of doing bad, I am gonna do real bad and probably lose the motivation to keep playing. Luckily when I started I had worked out a very good rainbowish strategy (lol) and there was lots worse than me getting smacked even harder haha, 100's upon 100's of noobs for those more versed in the Earth 2025 to feed upon. Set after set I got a little better, and stuck with it. It is a really interesting dynamic these days with so few players. Probably will end up more and more like tournament with a lot less attacking with less and less new players :(

Back in e2025 days I would do a 15k acre demo tech. Just a handful of grabs and usually finish 3rd or 4th. I would use the in game country search(type random #s into country name to get multiple results). I don't remember why I only got 15k acres when there were so many players to hit, lol.

I'm doing farmer tech start, I'm #2 if that works for you, I usually tech mil, weapons and some bus/res too depending on tech prices.

I went quite a while last couple sets not rebuilding farms and oil rigs. So in part I was a communist indy, farmer, oiler. I even calculated if buy agri tech would have paid off. It would have if I were to keep the farms the whole set. But I knew prices would fall and I eventually rebuilt the farms/rigs to indys.

But this set I have a feeling oil and food will be cheap the whole set (as a overreaction to last couple sets) so I recommend just teching or just producing turrets/jets.

Mixing techer with anything is a bad idea due to how the TPT is calculated.

Each strategy has a different need for tech. Casher, Farmer, Indy, Oiler in order from most tech needy, to least. So it stands to reason that a tech start casher would benefit more than a tech start CI. On primary tech start also slows down growth to make it less likely to become an early target and increasing the returns you will get when grabbing. For example if you start grabbing on day 10 you may get 300 acres from a target. On day 14 that same target may yield 500 acres. You also have access to a lower NW range of targets which over the course of the set may expand your overall attack pool. So if you don't tech start you may save 60 to 100 turns throughout the set, but you have to overcome those difficulties.

Clearly LB is very successful every set with an indy tech start. I don't think that has to do with the start. I think he is a very good player that grabs well. Any start can be made viable if you find the right targets and can balance defense and tech throughout the growth phase.
