i'm confused is what the newspaper published publically accesible info? If so what are people upset about, if not I understand the outrage.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. The information should be private and I hope more states designate the information as belonging to the permit holders so that the public is not permitted to find out like this.
In the peoples republic of New York, New Jersey, California among many others you are required to get a firearms purchaser id card to buy long guns and a separate permit for every handgun you buy. If a handgun permit is issued it becomes public record. Just because a permit was issued does not mean that a gun was ever purchased or is present in that particular household. If could have been sold, gifted to a family member, inherited in an estate if the purchaser died or even stolen but the issuing of the permit will stay public record.
In non commi states you are not required to acquire a permit to buy a long gun or handgun so no such records exist. If you are buying from a licensed dealer and you have proper state id, military orders or law enforcement equivalent you can buy any (non NFA) weapon with an FBI back ground check.
If you are a criminal you would go to your nearest low income densely populated area and look for sneakers hanging over a telephone poll. Stand under the sneakers and wait for the shady looking guy that was watching you from the nearby second floor window to approach you. Now you buy whatever you want to include handguns and NFA firearms in cash no questions asked, no returns.
All you Freedom haters can flame away.
