I don't think there is much debate - we are actually losing the "arms race" with bacteria. That said, in many cases, anti-biotics are the most effective tool we have to fight them. Unfortunately, there is no choice but to use them.

There are a lot of researchers investigating better ways to fight bacteria. Recently there was an article in some high impact journal (name escapes me) that described anti-microbial proteins discovered through a relatively new screening technique. Many bacteria actually produce anti-microbial proteins themselves to fight each other off. However, one of the many problems with finding these proteins is that they are hard to grow! The new screening technique takes advantage of their more natural growing conditions to capture these hard to find bacteria/proteins. Another famous ancedotal to describe how hard it is to grow bacteria: the microbe responsible for something like 90% of stomach ulcers was discredited for years because of the inability to culture it in a petri dish. There was evidence showing the bacterial culture in people's stomachs but it was impossible to grow outside. Thus, the investigator drank an infected person's stomach 'juices' to show he would get stomach ulcers that resembled the cultures. Many years later, the bacteria was grown in a petri dish and it was named H. Pylori.

Finally, Tellarion continues to prove he is an idiot. Pro-scribe is not the same as pre-scribe. Idiot.

tella talking out of his ass i see. i would never kill someone for winning via FA from an agreed reps deal with another alliance. i always drew the line when there was intra-FA occuring to either 'compensate' the person or simply to propel them into the rank.

i believe all FA the rank 1 country received came from another alliance due to a reps deal. if not, then he really doesn't deserve to have finished rank 1 and is a dirty scumbag.

Do you know how most vaccines are made? Although I am not familiar with how the measles one is made specifically, I am familiar with the general technique. It usually involves injection of an attenuated pathogen (a disabled pathogen) so that an immune reaction is created but the pathogen can't do real harm due to loss of virulence. This means these people are being infected with the pathogen and this only supports your paragraph about the side benefits of exposure to pathogens. Vaccines are exposing people to pathogens so let's keep doing it :)

Also I did not contradict myself. I was merely attempting to educate in how the body develops. The reason babies can't be exposed to vaccines is because of the time it takes to make the cells. When people say to wait 6 months or a year they don't say that based on actual knowledge of an individual person's immune system. It's a guess from data that suggests it's likely safe after that point. That said, it still doesn't hurt to vaccinate when you can to expose them to as much crap as possible to make their immune system competent.

The whole "side benefit of exposure" is an entirely different topic than vaccines, and it's clear you don't understand it because if you did you would know it only supports the vaccine cause.

Actually I am a bit of both - I am currently working in an MD/PhD program meaning I will be both a scientist and a physician when I finish. That said, I can also tell you that most physcians are not scientists - they are physicians. It's quite alarming how little most physcians know about science. They're usually just regurgitating some information they heard or read from somewhere else.

And yes, I am a self professed scientist because that is all I do right now (PhD portion of program). I literally do science.

Vaccines don't weaken the immune system. They strengthen it by making the immune system competent against the disease. I strongly suggest all people who are making claims that vaccines who weaken the immune system or don't work the way "we" think it does to read up on how the immune system works in general. When you're born you don't have an immune system - it needs time to develop. Babies actually rely on their mother's immune system to fight some pathogens and use their mother to help form their new one. It takes time. The human body needs to make tons of cells (ever thought about why you hear about blood cancers way more than other types of cancer? it's because blood cells are very active!) to create the immune system.

Vaccines are an especially powerful tool to help fight disease because they last a long time - you are teaching your immune system how to fight a disease. There is literally no down side. Any claims about ingredients are hog wash. I guarantee that you eat way worse crap than some of the things used to make vaccines. This is similar to the GMO nonsense people are crying about - guess what, eating a nucleic acid will not kill you!

I don't normally read most threads, but reading this hits at many of the reasons that I hate people in general. As a scientist and future physician I can't help but be disgusted in how people 'interpret' science and data. Just as science doesn't prove anything, anecdotal evidence is not proof of anything either. As conceited/arrogant as it may sound, I have little reason to believe that most, if any of you idiots here, have any real practice in data interpretation or identifying causation in events, and can only conclude that every single one of you are idiots.

And lastly, to make it clear, anyone who is anti-vaccine is a complete fluffing moron and it should be federal law that they become sterilized so that they don't have children.

tella, you're an idiot that has no idea what a good player looks like because you've never had one in your alliance. In regards to your comments on candy, and I'm being 100% honest here, it was because I literally had no other options (nobody wanted to do the FR work or had any experience in it - this much should be obvious when you consider how little information I actually shared with him).

regarding the topic: MD had a lot of positioning advantages this reset, which is partly in due to politics so I wouldn't take anything away from them regarding that. As far as players go LaF still has the best and it's not even close. The bigger issue for LaF nowadays is that all of our "elite" players simply don't have the time or interest to put in towards a game that is pretty pointless now (game changes that don't address key issues, lack of players, lack of politics change, etc). The vet core is solid but the LaF "elite" really boosted LaF to a completely different level that any alliance on this server couldn't even come close to emulating (it took 5 alliances at a 250(ish):70 member advantage to really take us down two years ago). I think the really scary thing will be riling up the entire LaF vet core - things were so stale for us the last 2 years a lot of ppl quit out of dis-interest in the game. Maybe this set will change things.

Regarding h4 and cheating - anyone who accuses h4 of cheating at any point in the last 5 years is an absolute moron. Even funnier is people still don't realize what happened between laf and rd despite the logs being posted over a year ago.

Some people take this game way too seriously. Any person who launches a "full investigation" into rumors probably needs to re-evaluate what they're doing with their time. Seriously, it is probably on the same level as KJ harassing people in real life.

Also, as I have said to MANY people over the course of the past 2 years, anyone who reads into rumors in this game is an idiot.

i dont know who it was and i dont care who it was. laf has had to deal with a very large number of suiciders the past 2-3 sets and nothing was ever done about it. nobody ever gave a fluff about it then and nobody will give a fluff about this now. if suddenly anti suicide things are implemented it only perpetuates the conspiracy that "qz only makes changes after bad things happen to evo", which would still benefit laf more than evo so why should i care?

the only thing laf ever tries to do is stop buyouts by having people place blocks. the blocks are hardly ever succesful because anyone determined to do a buyout will burn up their alliances money regardless of how much it costs.

anyone who thinks that tech being low has anything to do with the performance of tech last set is completely off base.

the more likely reason tech is 'low' (honestly, if its over 2200 its good) now is because virtually every alliance is netting. I would put down money that alliances that normally go to war have no idea how to build a proper netting country. thus, they are using their war strats and modifying them to netgain. their war strats tend to use tech phases or play as straight techer. this is typically seen in sets where there is mass war too - tech prices start very low because every alliance is teching and dumping their tech/not buying tech. its only when fighting breaks out that tech prices climb.

given that there will likely not be any fighting, i would bet that tech is low all set. you can thank the alliances that typically go to war for that.

SECONDLY THOUGH, I'M GOING TO MAKE A FINAL ATTEMPT TO BETTER EXPLAIN THE POSITION OF THOSE OF US WHO ARE AGAINST GHOST ACRES. I WILL NOW ABANDON THE LETTERS OF POWER SO THAT YOU SIMPLETONS MIGHT HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF UNDERSTANDING!

There has been a lot of talk on this thread about how those who don't like ghost acres are opposed to an "even playing field".

Nothing could be further from the truth. The field already IS even for all, without ghost acres. I - as well as most of the people who share my opinion, I believe - object to land being gained in vast sums without risk. Risk is what makes this game interesting. Reward is what compels people to take the risk of stealing the land of another country. And conflict... without conflict this game is just plain boring.

We enjoyed the competitive nature that this game once had. Granted, the alliance server has always been different in that regard, but now it is possible to avoid risk almost entirely, and still remain competitive at the highest levels. This should not be. It cheapens the game, and reduces it to barely more than a spreadsheet. There is no need for diplomacy, no need to choose targets carefully, no need to spend any time trying to outgain your competition.

I asked this question before and it was ignored, but I think it is a very valid question. For those who think ghost acres are good for the game, would you also think that a bonus points-based land gain system would be good? One where you could spend bonus points and gain a large number of acres, at the expense of some of your buildings? And if not, why not? How would this system be any different than land trading?

And one last time, just to be perfectly clear.. I don't think any less of anyone who land trades. The problem is with the mechanics of the game, not the players. The players are doing what they're supposed to do; making the most of whatever advantages they can legally give themselves.

HA!
