bore is LaF scum!

bore hasn't played this game in 10 years. He wasn't in LaF then.

Haha I would actually consider LaF to be my home, it is where I got my first top100 23 years ago, and where I've played the most, though I have been in EoS, UCN, NM, Omega, SoL, LCN, IX, NeoFed, MD and many more :) My last few resets in Alliance were ten tears ago in iMag.

It just doesn't make sense as I don't have the time to update the site or play the game. But it looks like I'll be able to transfer the whole VPS to the guy who has sent me the most bug report emails the last few years :)

In the beginning I tried several $5/month VPS-services, but they weren't stable enough for a site like eestats where you want updated data at all times, so I went to Linode, which was $10. After a while the db got bigger and queries got slower, so I upgraded to 2GB RAM to keep more data in memory, that was $20/month for a few years before they reduced prices to $12/month. So varying costs over the years, but probably around $2500 total. Cheapest would be to run it off a spare machine at home, but I'm not letting this bunch connect to a machine on my home network :)

Haha, timing is a coincidence, I don't know what you guys are up to :) I just realized paying a couple hundred bucks a year to host a site for a game I haven't played in several years was a waste of money that could be used for beer.

I haven't got time to properly hand over the code to someone, I don't know how or why the site still works, much less what would be needed for someone to set it up on their own server. I'm not even sure what language (english or norwegian) the code is using for variables etc :)

But I'm looking into transferring the whole server to someone to see if they can figure it out, so hoping it will work out!

Does boxcar and ghqnet pull from all server feeds? Could be a glitch in the feeds with values that neither eestats nor earthgraphs have good enough errorhanding for. Please don't do a Bobby Tables in the feeds :P

OK there were some more broken things that I've fixed now. My EEstats URL is now https://www.eestats.com/my.php until I figure out the magic of Apache RewriteEngine.

I tried to figure out what the problem was, then I updated some things, that broke everything, then fixed some of it and now maybe it's working again.

I don't know why it stopped working though, and tbh I don't understand most of how eestats works...

I've read your emails btw, I just haven't had time to look at it before now. works fine, and so apparently does the ICANN technical contact email :P

well thats what you get for running a site with the possibility for too many and too big requests from a too large db on a box with too little memory that hasn't been updated in too many years

apparently i thought nested sql-queries were much better! :D

anyways, all-x top ten commented out for now. all-resets history stuff will always be slow though, cause it's loads of stuff. (the db is a bit over 4gb now).

hehe, everything starts loading really slowly every time i try to load the top ten page. debugging now:)

logged in or not shouldn't affect loading times. if you're experiencing long loading times on something that usually loads fast it's probably due to someone else clicking on a page with a crappily coded database query :P

typo in the ranksfeed where a country was listed as playing in reset 5114 instead of 514 caused the whole reset to be archived. moved back everything from the archive, but i haven't checked if anything got lost. eestats doesn't have logs. or backups :P

anyways, bad news is the server had to be rebooted after 504 days uptime, good news is it's now got twice the amount of ram, a whole gigabyte :P

thanks to serp for e-mailing about the brokenness.

from a guy on fb who did the rally in 2011:

(...)issues along the Turkey/Syria border. There were fires along the border and in the oil fields and refugees trying to cross whilst we we there in 2011. I'm not sure I'd be too keen to stick quite so close to the border now with the potential threat of chemical weapons and patriot missiles. (..) This was also just days after we were on the same roads, in the same mountains and indeed stayed a night (and got very drunk) with Kurdish forces (General Hasan?). Having said that, the people were some of the friendliest we met on the whole rally. They even helped us when we straying close to a minefield near the Iranian border :)

see how nice people are stopping them from driving into a minefield :P

A few people have asked earlier why I don't have any ads on eestats, and I've answered that I think it looks like crap, and I don't really think it would do anyone any good. A few people have also asked me if it's possible to donate to the server costs, and I've said that I don't really mind paying the $240 a year out of my own pocket.

Well, in the name of rainforests worldwide, I'm going back on all that. Me and a couple of friends are driving 10.000 miles from Norway to Mongolia this summer for charity, and I've put up an 'ad' for or fundraising page on top of eestats.

In return for any donations you will get your name (or nick, or whatever you give) listed on our website and on the car. If you mark your donation with something EE-related I'll also put the sum towards an Earth Empires-logo to put on the car :)

someone else will run it.

i haven't played for several months and haven't updated eestats for even longer. i have no plans right now to start playing and don't have any spare time to fix eestats stuff.

so i'm offering eestats to someone who wants to take over. It is poorly written (in php with mysql) but apparently pretty robust, and runs as is without any interference.

i would like to hand it over to someone who will make it better, and i will be available to answer any questions about my poorly written code. you will have to provide your own hosting though:)

bob: i realize i forgot to respond to your e-mail. i'm good though, and I'm gonna find you online as soon as rl things calm down.
